The Silk Road

An inlaid wood floor that tells the story of a journey

There are projects that are not created to surprise at first glance, but to be discovered over time. This custom inlaid wood floor created by Berti in China along one of the symbolic stretches of the Silk Road is one of them.

Berti collaborated on the creation of a highly handcrafted solid wood floor through the Guangzhou-based company Starchain Investment Trading, developing a bespoke design through direct dialogue between the client and production. Not the signature of a single architect, but the synergistic work between a company and a manufacturer specializing in high-end artistic parquet. The result is a custom wood inlay of approximately 300 square meters, developed for the Chinese President’s office, on a total surface area of 12,591 × 7,230 mm.

The floor was designed as a single continuous surface, capable of accompanying movement within the spaces without visual interruptions, ensuring aesthetic harmony and technical precision.

Custom geometric and symbolic interlocking.

The design comes to life underfoot. As you walk, the eye is drawn to calibrated geometries, changes in wood species, and material contrasts that emerge naturally. The figures of camels and dromedaries, made of ash, cross the surface like a caravan: a direct reference to travel, cultural exchange, and time. The “stages” of the journey are represented by small spheres inlaid in American Walnut, Ash, and Swarovski crystals. These elements are set into the wooden surface with extreme precision and are revealed only when light passes through them. An ash border symbolically marks the beginning of the Silk Road, becoming the generative point of the entire design. The base consists of Oak square space, selected to ensure stability and visual continuity. The inlay interacts with the architectural space, following paths and accompanying functions without imposing. It is a true example of custom artistic parquet, where design, function, and material find a balance.

A special project that combines Italian culture and craftsmanship

This wood floor was born from the meeting of two different worlds: the extensive Italian experience in the production of high-quality parquet and an international client who chose wood as a way to tell the story of a very important place.

For centuries, the Silk Road has been a place where materials, ideas, and symbols are exchanged. This project also fits into this context: an inlaid wood floor that combines culture, technical precision, and artistic sensitivity.

The result is a floor that does not seek to draw attention, but allows itself to be discovered gradually. It does not just cover a space, but accompanies it and makes it special. It is made of wood, light, and details that reveal themselves step by step, creating a unique and welcoming atmosphere.
